21st Century Skills for Teachers

21st Century Skills for Teachers
The International Society for Technology Education has re-released its Educational Technology Standards for Teachers. These standards include 21st century skills such as finding and managing resources, publishing on the web, and connecting with colleagues, students, parents, and local and global communities. Teachers must be proficient in these skills in order to model good practices for their students and to help students include these skills for learning. These activities will give you a chance to actively participate in using some of the web-based tools that are commonly used in classrooms and to discuss authentic ideas for using these tools. Yes, this looks a little overwhelming, but it really doesn't take too long to do some investigating and to figure out what pieces are important to you in your professional life and what pieces could be used in your traditional and virtual classrooms. Fortunately, most of these tools are easy to use and can be mastered with little or no help. The key part is to be thinking about the pedagogical aspects and to start creating opportunities for students to use the tools in their learning.

Allowing your students to use these tools can give them some new and exciting ways of demonstrating their learning, and at the same time can provide alternatives for matching activities with learning styles while promoting cooperation, sharing, and the building of a learning community. The goal of this workshop is to introduce you to some of the online tools that are being used successfully by teachers, to give you an opportunity to try one or two of the tools, and to reflect on how these tools could be used in teaching and learning.
